In 2008, there were 386,500 house fires in the United States, killing 2,755 civilians. Fire safety experts say most of those house fires could have been prevented with a few extra precautions. Here is a simple fire safety checklist to help you stay safe:
• Make sure all electrical cords are in good condition
• Keep your clothes dryer vent and filter clean and free of lint.
• Never leave food unattended while cooking on the stovetop.
• Test smoke alarms regularly, and replace batteries often.
• Do not run extension cords under carpets or across high-traffic areas.
• Place portable space heaters at least three feet away from flammable items.
• Make sure all escape routes are clear of clutter and easily accessible.
• Keep curtains and other flammable items far away from your stovetop.
• Get your furnace and/or chimney serviced and inspected at least once per year.
• Turn off portable space heaters before going to sleep or leaving the room.
